Steam Machine is the name given to the brand of products developed by Valve designed to run SteamOS, Steam's operating system. Multiple companies have approached Valve to create their own version of the Steam Machine, different from the original.

The Steam Controller was released alongside the Steam Machine to help users interact with the software much easier than by using a third-party controller. Valve also released the Steam Link, which streamed content from a user's computer to a monitor, although it was discontinued in November 2018 and replaced with the Steam Link app.

History[]

Prior to the introduction of the Steam Machine, Valve had announced it would consider developing a console near the end of 2012. Journalists started referring to this console as the "Steam Box" and began theorizing on what it would support and the specifications of the hardware inside it.

Valve released the Steam Machines alongside SteamOS in the last week of September 2013, hoping to release the machines by the middle of 2014. 300 beta units were shipped on December 13th, 2019, and based on the feedback provided by these testers, Valve pushed back the release date from May 2014 to November 2015, and was able to be purchased by consumers on November 10th, 2015.
